What are the different areas of speech and language? 

• Language is the use of words or symbols that represent concepts for social interaction and communication with one another:

•Speech is the production of language. Speech consists of the following areas:

              ·Articulation: the production of speech sounds

                  ·Voice: Use of the vocal folds and breathing to produce sound

                  ·Fluency :The rhythm of speech 

What is a language disorder?

When a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language), or sharing   thoughts, ideas, and feelings completely (expressive language), then he or she has a language disorder.

What is a speech disorder?

When a person is unable to produce speech sounds correctly or fluently, or has problems with his or her voice, then he or she has a speech disorder.

When should I seek out a speech language therapist? 

Children are consistently developing language as they grow. Challenges may arise which are not always indicative of a speech and language delay. However, some signs indicative of a speech and/or langauge disorder are the following: 

  • Difficulty interacting with others
  • Making few sounds
  • Does not use gestures to communicate
  • Says only few words
  • Does not put words together to make sentences
  • Has trouble playing and talking with other children
  • Has problems with early reading and writing skills
  • Produces speech or sounds that are not understood by others
